Cape Town – Child Protection Week started on Sunday with government and civil society planning to spend the next seven days paying attention to some of the difficult issues faced by South Africa's young people.

The Gauteng government is focusing on drug rehabilitation for youths in the province battling with addiction to the point of being a danger to themselves.

Social Development MEC, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, would like to spend the time educating families and children about children's rights, with the help of the National Prosecuting Authority and the justice department.

This would be done through a series of workshops and community meetings on topics such as early childhood development, teenage pregnancy and the law as it related to children.

Among its various events, the Western Cape government is promoting the importance of vaccinations for children and would open another of its "Youth Cafes", this time in Vrygrond.

The fifth of its kind, the Youth Cafe offers skills and leadership training as well as giving the youth internet access for job hunting or information on starting a business.

Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, launched Child Protection Week in Braakspruit, North West and is talking to youths about issues such as bullying.

Dlamini is also promoting the Child Services Directory that contains information on organisations in provinces that provide help to orphans and vulnerable families.
