Pretoria - A 24-year-old man, Andreas Johannes van Wyk, is the man who handed himself over to police, saying he had information about the murder of Anika Smit, a high school pupil who was brutally killed in her home six years ago.

The muscular man arrived in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Monday morning, wearing a grey blazer.

He is facing charges of murder and rape.

Watching from the packed public gallery were three "persons of interest" in the matter: Her father, Johan Smit, ex-boyfriend, Nico Venter, and Damian Treeby, an acquaintance who testified about satanic rituals at an inquest into her death.

The media was not allowed to take pictures of Van Wyk.

Smit was sexually assaulted and both her hands were chopped off when she was killed at her father's home in 2010.

Up to now, the police have not been able to find enough evidence against anyone to prosecute.

Van Wyk stays in custody and will be back in court on September 26.
