The Commonwealth and other foreign states pledged to lift sanctions against South Africa following the institution of the Transitional Executive Council and former statesman Nelson Mandela’s call to the UN General Assembly to lift these sanctions.

The call came with the exception of oil and arms embargoes, however.

The European Community lifted its sanctions against South Africa on 4 October 1993.

The United Nations only lifted all sanctions after the inauguration of the new government, when the Security Council adopted Resolution 919 on 25 May 1994, which terminated the mandatory arms embargo and all other measures against South Africa.
