The notorious Stander gang robbed three banks in less than an hour in the Johannesburg city centre on 19 January 1984.

The group consisted of three men led by a former police detective, Andre Stander.

While still a detective, Stander would rob banks on his off days and even during his lunch time and he was caught after robbing several banks in Durban.

He was sentenced to seven years in prison then he escaped with two inmates he had befriended in prison, Allan Heyl and Lee McCall, with whom he started robbing banks with after escaping.

McCall and Stander died during two separate shoot-outs with the police in 1984. Heyl is the last surviving member of the group and was released on parole in 2005 after he was busted in England after a few bank robberies in the country.

A motion picture depicting the Stander Gang’s bank robbery spree was released in 2003.
