Today, 25 years ago, World Press Freedom Day was declared | News Article
According to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation), the objective of World Press Freedom Day is “to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.”

World Press Freedom Day was declared on 3 May 1991 and the day has been observed since.

Unlike many African countries, South Africa still enjoys media freedom; however, it has a history of a restricted press and censorship. In 1994, laws were enacted to protect free speech. Act No.108 of 1996 of the South African Constitution protects and provides for the freedom of the media, freedom of expression and access to information.
