The Blue Bulls assistant coach, Gary Botha, who led the team in the 2006 Currie Cup final against the Toyota Free State Cheetahs, says they don’t pay too much attention to the underdogs tag heading into this week’s final.

The former hooker is of the view that they aren’t concerned about the favourites – hero’s tags people associate with teams.

“We don’t really worry about underdogs-hero’s cliché tags that people give teams,” said Botha.

“I do believe that with the guys being a bunch of young guys and being exposed to certain situations, they will pick up the necessary experience.

“As the team progresses and as time progresses players progress and develop and I think that is the biggest thing we’re trying to get into place here - to just let the guys grow together as a team.”

The scrums and line-outs will once again prove to be key battles in the match, but the former Springbok hooker, Botha, says the game has evolved and there are other important aspects of the match.

“The game of rugby has grown a bit and we're also used to be like that, waiting for other guys to make mistakes.

“I think that the broken field is a big concerning area where a lot of teams do score a lot of tries from.

“It’s the team that adapts the quickest to broken field and takes the opportunities over there. Those are usually the guys who convert them into tries and that’s what will be necessary.”

Both teams will be naming their sides for the clash today.

Saturday’s final between the Toyota Free State Cheetahs and the Blue Bulls at the Toyota Stadium kicks off 16:00.
