“I think we were also the better team on the field, even though we started a little bit shy and we conceded an easy goal early, but I think after the goal, we managed to play really well.”

Orlando Pirates claimed the bragging rights on Saturday by beating their bitter rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, 3-2 in the big Soweto derby.

The Buccaneers came from behind twice in the Premier Soccer League game at the Orlando Stadium and this led to them shooting up to the second on the log.

Ashley du Preez opened the scoring with a 6th minute goal, but Monnapule Saleng leveled matters for the Buccaneers in the 24th minute.

On the stroke of half-time Du Preez completed his brace to hand the Glamour Boys a 2-1 lead at the break.

That joy was short-lived as Thabiso Lebitso leveled the derby in the 58th minute.

Saleng would have the last say as he scored the match-winning goal for the Sea Robbers in the 68th minute to complete his brace.

The win sees Pirates claim the league double over Chiefs for the first time since the 2008/9 season.

The Pirates coach, Jose Riveiro, said her felt is was a proper Soweto derby for a change.

“I think it was proper derby. I think that the previous ones, at least in the league, were much more , I don't want to say boring, but I think this time we had the opportunity to see much more football, more different momentum in the game from both teams.”

In Saturday's other results - Mamelodi Sundowns beat Chippa United 2-0 to extend their lead at the top of the table. Sekhukhune United in their turn beat Moroka Swallows 4-1. Stellenbosch FC and Cape Town Spurs played to a 1-1 draw, while SuperSport United and AmaZulu also shared points with a 1-1 draw, and Richard Bay and TS Galaxy played to a goalless draw.

On Sunday at 15:30, Polokwane City and Golden Arrows play at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, while at 17:45 Royal AM will host Cape Town City at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
