'Violent attacks not unique to farmers'─── 14:37 Fri, 05 Oct 2012
Johannesburg - The SA Institute of Race Relations says farmers in the country are not uniquely vulnerable to armed attacks. An analysis of data on farm attacks showed that the number of farm attacks per 100 000 farmers is comparable to the number of criminal attacks per 100 000 people in the general population. The Institute says it used data collected by the Transvaal Agricultural Union because the police do not publish data on farm attacks. Researcher, Lucy Holborn, says the data shows that farm attacks sit somewhere in the centre of general crime rates in the country.
