Aussie cricketer Phil Hughes passes away | News Article

Australian cricketer Phil Hughes has passed away in the St. Vincent’s’ Hospital in Sydney.

Hughes had been in a medically induced coma for the past two days after being struck on the head by a Sean Abbott short pitched delivery during the Sheffield Shield match between the New South Wales Blues and the South Australia Redbacks.

The player stumbled for a few moments before collapsing on the pitch after sustaining a fractured skull.

Hughes received CPR and oxygen on the pitch at the Sydney Cricket Ground before being rushed to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and scans.

Hughes passed away this morning with his family at his bedside.

Australian team doctor Peter Brukner announced a news a little earlier this morning.

"It is my sad duty to inform you that a short time ago Phillip Hughes passed away," Brukner read in a statement.

"He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday.

"He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends.

"As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time. "Cricket Australia kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family, players and staff be respected."

Hughes became the youngest batsman to score two centuries in a Test, achieving the feat in just his second Test for the Baggy Greens, against South Africa in Durban.

It is a record that still stands.

In 26 Tests, he scored 1,535 runs at 32.65 with three centuries and seven fifties. Hughes also played 25 One-Day Internationals for Australia with highest score of 138 not out and played in one T20 International.
