Bleomfontein - Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies has highlighted the importance of food processing sector, saying his department has contributed R1,2-billion to the sector between 2009 and 2013.

This was during his opening address at the annual Avi Africa Conference and Exhibition underway in Johannesburg this week.

Davies told poultry roleplayers the food-processing sector contributes 11% of total manufacturing while in employment terms, the sector contributes 15% of total manufacturing employment.

The South African Poultry Association’s (Sapa) annual conference is also focusing on various poultry issues. Day two comprises several practical sessions looking into poultry breeding, animal health, welfare issues and other operational topics. Day three the focus turns to more long term outlooks and planning for the sector at large.

Sapa CEO Kevin Lovell will address the general session on current and future trade matters. A parallel session focusses on small farmers, including a case study looking into the life story of Mabel Motlhale of Warrenton Super Chickens.
