Bultfontein farmer's invention being tested in Ghana | News Article

Bloemfontein - A Bultfontein farmer whose inventions are taking root all the way up Africa is at it again, this time with a hand powered implement that will assist subsistence farmers to plant and fertilize with precision.

Michris Janse van Rensburg says on a recent visit to Ghana he identified the need for something to help farmers plant at the correct depth and distance, as well as fertilize efficiently. He says there are hardly any farmers there on land larger than 5-10 hectares, with more than 90% farming on only 1-2 hectares of land.

He says his new invention will help farmers without access to tractors, or even  electricity and diesel, to actually get phosphates into the ground where they are needed:

He says the first prototypes have been sent to Ghana to be tested during the final part of the northern hemisphere country’s current planting season, with plans to continue testing in Lesotho and the rest of Southern Africa during the new planting season.
