Midterm budget should focus on bigger growth, bigger tax base and smaller debt─── EARL COETZEE 15:21 Tue, 25 Oct 2016
Bloemfontein - Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, has the difficult task of increasing South Africa's economic growth, finding a way to grow the tax base, and decreasing government debt.
This is the view of Chief Economist at KPMG, Lullu Krugel, ahead of tomorrow's midterm budget speech.
Krugel says it is important that Gordhan continues to placate foreign ratings agencies by announcing plans which will show he is serious about increasing the country's less than stellar economic growth rate. Curbing the country's spiraling debt will serve the same purpose.
Meanwhile, locals will also have to be appeased by addressing issues such as the tertiary education crisis and our State-owned enterprises.
