The ANC’s Branch General Meetings (BGMs) are to meet amidst a fierce dispute over the candidate nomination list across some municipalities in the North West.

Disgruntled ANC members and supporters previously aired their dissatisfaction with the validity of candidate lists in the Moretele and Matlosana Local Municipalities, among others in the province.

The ANC’s Interim Provincial Committees’ (IPC) coordinator, Hlomani Chauke, tells OFM News that these BGMs have to resolve issues around the candidate. Chauke says one of the remedies around the issues will at least include the nomination of four names of candidates which will be presented to communities for their consideration. ANC members in Klerksdorp previously marched to the local offices of the ANC. Moretele residents descended on the ANC headquarters in Johannesburg and violence also broke out in Swartruggens over the candidate lists in those provinces.

Chauke says that given the headache facing the ANC nomination list, the process and the system of the ANC will allow the BGMs structures to meet and will then select candidates. Those candidates will then be taken to the community for its consideration.

The community will also be given the opportunity to nominate their candidates.

"There were a number of meetings that have taken place and some of them collapsed. In some areas where the community-based meetings did not go through - in terms of the guidelines and the structure of the provincial structure - we have the responsibility of filling those positions and therefore this means that we will have to go and market these candidates, so we are in line,” he adds.

Chauke further adds that there is no way we can undermine the outcome of the community. Every outcome of a community meeting is what has been recorded because it’s a partnership between the ANC and the community.

OFM News previously reported that the party has received a lifeline following the Constitutional Court judgment that allowed the electoral commission to reopen the process of the candidate nomination list.

On Monday, the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) decided that the decision of the IEC to reopen the candidate nomination process for the 2021 municipal elections, in terms of the court order issued on 3 September 2021, is not unconstitutional, unlawful, and invalid.
