The working condition of workers, their safety, and compliance, amongst others, are set to be in the spotlight during the visit of the Labour Department's minister in the North West on Wednesday.
Minister Thulas Nxesi is set to inspect working conditions, safety at work, and compliance of companies to labour laws and regulations in Potchefstroom.
The departmental spokesperson, Teboho Thejane, says Nxesi, who will be flanked by his Deputy Minister, Boitumelo Moloi, will from Wednesday to Friday lead a team of inspectors in the North West Province on mega blitz inspections. He says the two will be targeting road freight and logistics; iron and steel; and manufacturing sectors. Thejane adds that these inspections are a joint operation with other government departments and stakeholders such as the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), and Police Services.
“During these blitz inspections a number of workplaces and trucks will be inspected and the department will be looking for compliance with labour legislation such as the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Unemployment Insurance (UI) Act, Compensation Fund (CF) Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), and the National Minimum Wage Act,” Thejane further adds.
The National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI) is also expected to assist with the enforcement of other disciplines.
