Disgruntled residents at the Theunissen-based Masilonyana Municipality in the Free State are on Friday set to serve the troubled local municipality with papers of an intended protest march.

This comes after the municipality effected a 2019 court order, evicting residents from a piece of land allegedly occupied illegally.

Speaking on behalf of residents, community leader Mpholo Moshe says the municipality has failed to allocate sites for residents in the past 20 years and as a result, people have struggled to get proper housing from the government. He says residents were promised a new piece of land but there are concerns regarding that piece of land. Moshe says the piece of land being offered by the municipality is inhabitable and residents have since objected to the offering.

He has warned that if the municipality refuses to listen to their concerns, they will have no choice but to embark on a protest. The municipality’s eviction letters are despite a standing landmark ruling by the Constitutional Court in 2017 over the eviction notices.
