'Kick Your Habit' week kicks off─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 09:34 Sun, 24 Jul 2022
The Aurora Alcohol and Drug Centre, together with non-profit organisation, iDestiny, will jointly kick off the ‘Kick your Habit’ challenge from tomorrow; to raise awareness surrounding the complexities related to addiction and dependency.
The challenge will this year be joined by a total of 35 Grade 9 learners from Bloemfontein High school.
In a media statement, it is explained that the challenge also seeks to build awareness through experience; by challenging individuals within communities and the country to stop using one thing for a week - and experience what a substance dependent individual might go through during treatment.
This might include not consuming caffeine, tobacco, chocolate, or even going shopping for a week.
However, it is important to consider your choice and select a habit that you indulge in on a regular basis.

Keeping a daily online log, or blog of your progress is encouraged, as this will create awareness of the difficulties faced by dependents on a daily basis.
The challenge will run from 25 to 29 July.
iDestiny runs a programme called “Gold Peer 2 Peer” at Bloemfontein South High School.
Learners from the school will this year adopt the South African National Council on Alcoholism (SANCA) challenge as their community upliftment project in partnership with Aurora Alcohol & Drug Centre.
Aurora, also a non-profit organisation, was established to treat, prevent and raise awareness of drug dependence within the Free State, and has been in existence for more than 50 years.
The ‘Kick your habit’ challenge seeks to inform the public about the services available; not only for drug users but also to their family members and other individuals who support people with substance use disorders.
The statement further explains that whether your daily log is posted online, or is private, is up to you - as long as you engage with the challenge.
