Some concerns remain around Bio Bill─── 08:37 Thu, 26 May 2016
Bloemfontein - The Democratic Alliance has given its approval of the North West Biodiversity Management Bill but is concerned about some aspects of the Bill.
Provincial DA spokesperson on Tourism, Jacqueline Theologo, says the Bill was drafted to assist in the management of the game breeding industry in line with national legislation.
The main focus of the Bill is to change the current permit system and to simplify it. Attention was given to protected areas, as well as intensive, semi-intensive and extensive game farm systems.
Theologo says although they have given approval, they are concerned about aspects such as the Bill’s regulations and the manner in which the species list has been set out.
“Unfortunately, the draft regulations were never supplied to us as the Legislature and those are the regulations that would govern this act and pertain to how a Bill is drafted. This would have given us an idea of the outcomes and of what they plan to do in future.
“We also would have wanted to see the species list split up more into maybe a red list, an orange list and then the green list, where it’s now all within one list of all the animals.”
