Bloemfontein - The price of a basic basket of food in May increased by more than 15% when compared to the same time last year.

This was revealed in the latest National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) monthly food basket price report.

The basket comprises 22 items, including things like sugar, milk, eggs, baked beans, apples, bread, maize meal, beef chuck and chicken, among others.

It states the cost of the basket, excluding oranges, increased by just over R80, from nearly R520 in May 2015 to over R600 in May 2016.

Chicken portions showed the biggest increase at more than 58% year-on-year, with potatoes next in line at over 45% more expensive than last year.
