Government revises water storage rules | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Department of Water and Sanitation has published revisions to the rules in the National Water Act on the taking and storing of water from both surface and groundwater sources.

According to a report by landbou.com, water users with registered rights to draw water from rivers or boreholes and store this for later use could face limitations of as much as nearly 150 000 cubic meters per annum in certain areas.

The maximum amount of water that can stored per year has also been revised, and limits have also been imposed on the maximum rate of abstraction.

Meanwhile, the revisions were published in the Government Gazette of 2 September and will come into effect six months from the date of publication.

Water users are urged to ensure compliance and bring any necessary license applications within this period.
