AU Commission meets on agribusiness plans for Africa | News Article

Johannesburg - A meeting has been held in Johannesburg to explore the establishment of an apex body for private sector agribusiness roleplayers on the continent.

The meeting is focused on the Continental Agribusiness Strategy, an initiative of the African Union Commission, the AUC, and Nepad. It revolves around finding ways to improve agribusiness investment and enable sustainable agricultural growth in Africa.

One of the key talking points involves the establishment of a Private Sector Apex Body. The meeting is also looking at the development of a framework for boosting intra-African Trade.

According to a statement, these issues are central to the implementation of the so-called Malabo Declaration of 2014 on accelerated agricultural growth and transformation. The declaration comprises seven key commitments for agricultural transformation in Africa, which includes increased private sector investment in Africa’s agricultural value chains.

The outcome of the meeting will be submitted to the AU Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment, in December 2016.
