The management of Bloemfontein Celtic have decided to cancel the annual End of Season Awards function for a second year running.

Last year the club's chairperson, Max Tshabalala, gave the side an ultimatum to beat Moroka Swallows or the function would be called off.

On Saturday morning, however, the side made the announcement that the awards function was called off even before the side took to the field against Polokwane City in their final match of the season.

According to the teams’ managing director, Rali Ramabodu, it would have been fitting to award the players following the season in which they ended 11th in the standings.

"This season, things were terrible for us. We saw our team constantly losing games and sometimes even matches we were supposed to win.

"We genuinely tried throughout the season to remedy the ailing situation and to a certain degree without luck.

"If you go back to the archives, you will realise that we were missing even the easiest of chances created.

"We went through a bad patch, psychologically, that had a negative effect on the players."

The team did, however, end the season strongly and captain Bevan Fransman told OFM Sport that it's important to take the good spirit into the new season.

"It’s very important. If we didn’t collect those points early in the season it would have been very tough, considering the results following the Christmas break.

"You have to take advantage of those first points. I think a lot of teams are not quite as organised in those first four or five games.

"The coaches play around to find their best lines and tactics to use on the fields, so I think the teams that are the most organised early in the season normally get the quick getaway."

Meanwhile, Jomo Cosmos were relegated to the National First Division on Saturday after losing 3-1 to Maritzburg United in Potchefstroom.
