Iceland caused the biggest upset in European football history last night when they sent England crashing out of Euro 2016 in France.

The Icemen beat the English for an upset even bigger as than when Greece won the tournament back in 2004.

Wayne Rooney handed the English the lead in the 4th minute through a penalty, however, Ragnar Sigurdsson levelled matters with a goal for Iceland just two minutes later.

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson then scored the winner for Iceland in the 18th minute and from there it was a matter of holding on.

Kári Árnason says it was a night when Icelandic football shocked the world.

“Yes, this is without a shadow of a doubt the biggest win in Icelandic football history.

“It’s an absolute upset and we shocked the world today.”

The goalkeeper, Hannes Halldórsson, in his turn says it was an epic win by the tiny island nation.

“It’s really difficult to describe, I can’t really define the feelings at the moment.

“It’s also epic and unbelievable and that this is something more than a normal feeling of joy.

“It’s just an absolute adventure.”

In last night’s other game, the Azzurri of Italy brought an end to an era in European football by beating the double defending champions, Spain, 2-0.

Iceland will face the hosts France in the quarter-finals, while Italy will resume their bitter rivalry with the world champions, Germany.
