The Brazilian football club, Chapecoense, who lost the bulk of their players in last week’s fateful plane crash, have been awarded the Copa Sudamericana title by the governing body for football in South America.

Nineteen players as well as 21 sport journalists were among 77 people that lost their lives in the crash just outside of Medellin in Colombia.

The team was en route to face Athletic Nacional in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final when the tragedy occurred.

The winners, Chapecoense, will automatically qualify to play in the Copa Liber-ta-do-res, which is the top tier of South American club football.

It also means that they will face Atletico Nacional in the tournament seeing that the Columbian outfit are the defending champions of the Copa Liber-ta-do-tes.

It is expected that Chapecoense will field a team made up of mostly loan players as well as former players that have offered to help rebuild the team.

The Brazilian legend, Ronaldinho, as well as the former Chelsea and Barcelona striker, Eidur Gudjohnsen, have already offered their services.
