“The cause of the toddler's death is being investigated.”

The Northern Cape police are continuing an investigation into the death of a toddler who was found in the boot of a car on Monday (18/3). The toddler was found in the yard of a mechanic with his friend, three days after they were reported missing.

Kokeletso Motaung (3) was found dead, and his friend Itumeleng Moagi (4) was taken to the hospital and later discharged. Moagi is so traumatised he hardly speaks.

“The Jan Kempdorp police are investigating an inquest following the death of a 3-year-old boy,” said the Northern Cape police spokesperson Cherelle Ehlers. “The cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.”

‘An inquest is being investigated’

The two toddlers were found after a group of people, who were near the scene, heard knocks on the boot of a car in a mechanic’s yard in the informal settlement. The children were reported missing on Saturday (16/3) by their parents, the police and community members immediately started looking for them.

A community member posted on Facebook, asking for the community’s assistance in searching for them on Sunday morning. She posted again on Monday, informing the community the children had been found, but unfortunately, one passed away.

“Anyone who has information regarding the incident is urged to contact Lieutenant Colonel Elia Khonkhobe at 082 495 4686. All information given will be handled with confidentiality,” said Ehlers.
