“She faces a charge of murder, two of fraud, and one of defeating the ends of justice.”

The suspected North West insurance killer will appear at the Molopo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (28/3) after the court ruled she failed to prove any exceptional circumstance for her to be granted bail.

Agnes Setshwantsho (39) was denied bail on Friday, 19 January, and was remanded in custody. Further murder and fraud charges were added to her charge sheet when she made an appearance at the Kuruman Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 1 February.

“The additional charges emanate from an incident where the accused, who had insured her son for R6 million, made an insurance claim after the passing of her child under suspicious circumstances,” said Northern Cape NPA spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane.

“The accused was driven from the Mafikeng Female Prison, where she is presently being kept, to Kuruman. She was remanded in custody until her next appearance in the Molopo Magistrates’ Court in March.”

‘She is the beneficiary of 58 insurance policies’

After an investigation by the police and an insurance company it was discovered Setshwantsho had reportedly killed her relatives to profit from insurance claims, she was arrested on Thursday, 16 November. It is alleged she is the beneficiary of 58 insurance policies from her extended family.

She was traced and arrested in Centurion, during a takedown operation led by the SAPS in collaboration with an insurance company.

‘Tip-off was received from her relatives’

“The investigating team linked Setshwantsho to this case after a tip-off was received from her relatives and through investigations and evidence, including an exhumation of two bodies,” said North West police spokesperson Henry Mamothame.”

“Investigations are still underway regarding the alleged death threats against the state witness as well as the investigating officer. The accused will remain in police custody until the matter is concluded.”
