Fire at NWU’s Mafikeng Campus not related to protest action | News Article

Mahikeng - A fire that broke out in an office space in a building on the North West University's (NWU) Mafikeng Campus is not related to any protest action in the #FeesMustFall Campaign.

NWU spokesperson, Louis Jacobs, says minimal damage was caused by the fire last night. All indications at this stage are that the cause of the fire is as a result of an electrical fault.

The building in which the fire broke out during the night has been inspected. There are no indication of any unlawful entry into the building. Jacobs says only a table burned and there were some smoke damage.

Jacobs says over the past few days classes have been continuing as normal. Students are writing tests and handing in assignments. Exams on the campus are expected to start on October 29.

According to Jacobs all measures have been put in place to ensure that classes resume today at the NWU's Vaal Triangle Campus.

This comes after academic and administration services at the campus were suspended on Tuesday and yesterday after disruptive action, in which property were damaged and staff and students intimidated, escalated.
