Bloemfontein - In a surprising turn of events all charges were withdrawn in the Bloemfontein regional court in the high treason case against alleged right-winger, Louis Lategan.
He was the fifth right-winger to be arrested after police believed he was part of a conspiracy to commit various crimes of terror in the country. Allegedly he was to be responsible for blowing up fuel tanks in Port Elizabeth. In December Hein Boonzaaier, Johan Prinsloo, Martin Keevy and Mark Trollip were arrested after allegedly planning to kill ANC top leaders at the party’s elective conference in Mangaung.
Lategan appeared before Magistrate Mveko this morning for a formal bail application. The case was postponed to after lunch to allow Lategan’s attorney, Piet Schuurman, and state prosecutor Jannie Botha to consult. When they returned to court, the charges were withdrawn.
The NPA's Phaladi Shuping would not comment on rumours that Lategan will turn state witness.
