'Mantsopa municipality never promised accommodation'─── OWEN OWEN 06:08 Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Ladybrand - A large number of residents from the Manyatseng township in Ladybrand, who were evicted on Tuesday, spent the night under the stars, after the alternative accommodation promised to them by the municipality failed to materialise.
Chairperson of the interim Mantsopa Community Leadership, Lucky Damane, says the town hall, which was meant to house the evictees, was locked.
Kaye Durant from the Mantsopa Ratepayers Association however told OFM News that the hall was open, but disabled people were refused entry to the community hall.
Damane insists this is not the case.
Mantsopa Municipality Communications Manager, Mohlomi Mokoatsi, said the only commitment made to the South African Human Rights Commission on Tuesday was that they would try to accommodate 30 vulnerable people.
Mokoatsi said the situation has now become a political playing field, but as a municipality, they are trying to assist where they can.
Residents admitted to OFM News they are aware that they’re occupying the land illegally.
