Letsemeng residents want mayor out of office─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 14:59 Wed, 16 Jan 2019
The community of Koffiefontein in the Free State is adamant that their mayor, Thandiwe Reachable, must vacate office.
This despite the fact that normalcy has returned to the mining town after it was rocked by months of service delivery protests last year.
Community members in the Letsemeng Local Municipality say the provision of services has not improved as they often have to do with electricity and water cuts, potholes, leaking sewerage, and street lights that do not work. Reachable has further been accused of awarding tenders fraudulently to family, close friends and relatives while residents in the town battle with high unemployment rates. One of the residents, who would like to remain anonymous, told OFM News that it would be in the best interest of the community if the mayor steps downs and gives other people, who are capable to lead, an opportunity to do so.
It is alleged that the residents in neighbouring towns also experience the same ordeal when it comes to the state of service delivery and the availability of work opportunities.
Businesses and schools in the area were affected by the protests, which began in October 2018. Although the situation has at this stage calmed, it remains unclear as to whether learners will be progressed to the next grade or whether they will be writing exams.
