IEC ready for Mangaung by-election─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 13:24 Thu, 17 Jan 2019
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Free State says it’s all systems go for the upcoming municipal by-election set to take place in Bloemfontein on January the 30th.
The by-election set to take place in Mangaung (ward 47) is expected to be hotly contested. This, as members from different political parties have started with door-to-door campaigning in the areas of Heidedal, Estoire, and Raceway Park, amongst others. The ward, previously ran by the DA, became vacant as a result of the resignation of a Councillor, John de Bruin, who won it during the last municipal elections in 2016. The party has stated that they are confident their candidate, Mokgadi Kganakga, will be able to ensure the provision of service delivery to the community once she occupies the seat.
Meanwhile, the Free State provincial electoral officer, Jabulani Tshabalala, has in a statement confirmed that they have a total of 10 884 registered voters within this ward and urges those who will like to vote on Special Votes Day to submit their applications before the end of business day tomorrow, January the 18th. Voting stations will be opened from 7am to 9pm on the 30th of January, while special votes will take place just a day before.
Tshabalala has further appealed to the public to register for the general elections set to take place in May next year. The final registration weekend for national and provincial elections is on 26 and 27 January.
