Grade 12 learner allegedly embarrassed, sent home after uniform row─── PULANE CHOANE 11:38 Fri, 18 Jan 2019
It is reported that a Grade 12 pupil from Homevale High School was sent home earlier after allegedly being humiliated by learners and staff at the school in Kimberley, Northern Cape.
According to the spokesperson at the Provincial Education Department, Lehuma Ntuane, it is believed that the pupil went to school last week with a new school uniform design she hoped the school would adopt as the uniform for matric learners at the school. To her dismay, she was allegedly then called on stage at the school hall, insulted, then sent home to change. OFM News' Pulane Choane reports that the Northern Cape Department of Education is aware of the incident.
Ntuane said while it is the prerogative of the school to decide how its learners’ uniform should be, bullying tactics shouldn’t have been employed by the school to drive a point home.
"Of course, we know that in most these learners, these learners would intimidate, test and bully one another (with regards to differences on uniforms) and so we call on schools to reinforce anti-bullying measures and include them in the school's code of conduct, so we can curb any kind of bullying, be it verbal or physical," Nthuane said.
