The bodies of four South Africans which were found washed up on Mozambican shores after having been reported missing will be repatriated to South Africa today.

Among these bodies is that of Gregory Mfune, a man said to be from Bloemfontein in the Free State. This is according to the spokesperson for the Premier's Office in Limpopo, Kenny Mathivha. The Limpopo province, assisted by the Department of International Relations, the South African Embassy and Mozambican authorities confirmed that the last body among the four, which were reported missing, was recovered on Saturday 19 January.

The four victims were among a group of eight South Africans who arrived in Mozambique on Saturday 12 January, to celebrate a birthday. On Monday 14 January, the group reportedly then went on a swimming expedition at the Portuguese Island where four of the five that were swimming in the ocean, were overpowered by a sea wave, following which they were reported missing.

Meanwhile, four survivors of the ordeal are also said to be on their way back home and will reportedly, along with the families of the deceased, receive trauma counselling.

“The four deceased are Tjolo David Kaise, Mahlogonolo Mmatholo, Lesego Matsepe and Gregory Mfune. The two ladies (Mmatholo and Matsepe) are from Groblersdal in Limpopo, whereas the two guys are from Secunda and Bloemfontein (Kaise and Mfune) respectively. The surviving four are Vincent Rammupudu, Lesedi Mmotong, Basetsana Mogafe and Lefentse Mampuru, all from Tafelkop and Groblersdal in Limpopo,” Mathivha said.

Premier of Limpopo, Chupu Mathabatha, has in the meantime requested the mayor of the Elias Motsoaledi Municipality, Julia Mathebe, as well as the municipal manager, to go to Mozambique and provide support to the families that are already there on behalf of the South African government and Limpopo province.
