IEC Free State ready for final registration weekend─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 13:37 Wed, 23 Jan 2019
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Free State says they are ready for the upcoming final registration weekend on 26 and 27 January.
The Electorate’s Free State Manager, Itumeleng Liba, says they are currently conducting a two-day voter registration drive in 27 correctional facilities across the province where they are expecting approximately 3 000 inmates to register and vote in the upcoming national and provincial elections set to place in May. He alludes that over 900 inmates have thus far been registered and is hopeful the rest will be on their register by the end of business today. Liba says 1 529 voting stations will be opened between 8am and 5pm both Saturday and Sunday.
“At the moment we have just over 1.4 million voters on the roll registered and we have just over 121 000 voters without addresses. We are appealing to everyone over the age of 18 with appropriate documents to come to the voting stations this weekend to update their details and to check whether they are registered,” he said.
