Residents fed up with NC water crisis | News Article

Residents in Kimberley in the Northern Cape have had enough, this after the Sol Plaatje Municipality implemented stage 5 water restrictions about a week ago.

Many residents took to social media with pictures and videos to explain their frustrations. According to a resident and business owner in the area, the municipality cannot provide water to the community but several leakages from burst pipes have been reported across the city.

He further told OFM News that he lives a few houses away from the reservoir and that there has been a stream of water running from the premises since early this morning. He says that his business is suffering as he has almost 400 children in his care and flushing toilets and keeping the children hydrated has become a huge problem.

In response to OFM News' questions, the Sol Plaatje municipality spokesperson, Sello Matsie, told OFM News that the water crisis won't stop pipes from bursting because some of the pipes are as old as the city. He further said that the municipality deals with water leaks on a daily basis and tries to attend to them as fast as possible.

OFM News previously reported that residents of Kimberley in the Northern Cape can expect to be left without water. This is because the Sol Plaatje Municipality now has to implement stage 5 water restrictions due to the fact that the dam levels are critically low.

The Sol Plaatje municipality encourages residents of Kimberley to use water sparingly. Matsie told OFM News that the municipality had informed the public in advance of the water restrictions so that they could be prepared.
