Defence accuses police analyst in #PrellerSquareShooting of bias─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 11:36 Fri, 25 Jan 2019
The legal counsel of accused number one in the murder case of Bloemfontein businessman, Louis Siemens, accuses Free State crime analyst, Karin Jacobs, of being biased against the suspects.
Bail application proceedings for businessman, Stanley Bakili; Bayswater Detective, Molebatsi Mogoera; and court orderly, Kagiso Chabane, are continuing in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court this morning.
Advocate Izak Nel, on behalf of Bakili, first asked Jacobs what her job as a crime analyst entails, to which she responded that she is part of the investigation team, but is not the investigating officer. She explained that she analyses facts gathered by the investigator and draws certain conclusions from that data. Nel proceeded to allege that the provincial crime analyst at the South African Police Services was not objective.
OFM News' Olebogeng Motse reports the legal practitioner referred to exhibit three compiled by Jacobs to support his assertion.
According to Nel, exhibit three states that Bakili used Siemens’ vehicle to carry out crimes without the deceased’s knowledge. Nel asked Jacobs what facts did she use to come to this conclusion. In response she vaguely mentioned an sms from Siemens to Bakili about the vehicle which has been confiscated by police, where he instructs him to “sort out the issue”. The analyst did not go into depth regarding the sms. She remained adamant that while she did not see the sms herself on the deceased’s phone, it was a part of the data sent to her for analysis.
Jacobs further asked Magistrate Marlene Marais how could she be prejudiced against Bakili when she doesn’t even know him.
The cross-examination of the crime analyst continues.
