Mangaung by-election hotly contested─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 13:25 Fri, 25 Jan 2019
The ANC in the Free State is today expected to hold a rally at the Clive Solomon Stadium in Mangaung ahead of the upcoming by-elections on January 30.
The by-election set to take place in Ward 47 is expected to be hotly contested, as members from different political parties as they have since the beginning of the year started with door-to-door campaigning in the areas of Heidedal, Estoire, and Raceway Park, amongst others. The ward, previously ran by the DA, became vacant as a result of the resignation of a Councillor, John de Bruin, who won it during the last municipal elections in 2016.
The DA has stated that they are confident their candidate, Mokgadi Kganakga, will be able to ensure the provision of service delivery to the community once she occupies the seat. Meanwhile, the ANC National Executive Member (MEC) and Minister of Home Affairs, Siyabonga Cwele, is expected to deliver a keynote address at the rally.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Free State Manager, Itumeleng Liba, has confirmed to OFM News that preparations for this by-elections are running smoothly and its all systems go. He said over 11 000 registered voters are expected to cast their vote at the end of the month. Liba said expectations are high that the by-elections will proceed without any clashes.
Ten voting stations will be opened from 7am to 9pm on the 30th of January, while special votes will take place just a day before.
