Mangaung by-elections see some parties join hands─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 16:50 Tue, 29 Jan 2019
Special votes are in full swing in Mangaung’s Ward 47 where by-elections are set to take place on Wednesday.
The by-elections in this ward are expected to be hotly contested as members from different political parties have since the beginning of the year started with door-to-door campaigning in the areas of Heidedal, Estoire, and Raceway Park, amongst others. Ten voting stations have been opened today since 7am and will close at 9pm.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Free State Manager, Itumeleng Liba, previously told OFM News that over 11 000 registered voters are expected to cast their votes in this ward. Meanwhile, this by-election keeps drawing much attention with some political parties joining hands. The African Progressive Movement’s (APMo) National Chairperson, Denis Scheepers, who is currently in Heidedal, confirms they are withdrawing their candidate and will not partake in the by-elections. He, however, says they will now rally behind the Patriotic Alliance and support their candidate on the grounds that he is the ‘son of the soil’ and capable of bringing about the much-needed change in this ward.
The ward was previously run by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of Councillor John de Bruin, who won it during the last municipal elections in 2016. The DA has stated that they are confident their candidate, Mokgadi Kganakga, will be able to ensure the provision of service delivery to the community once she occupies the seat.
The ANC and the EFF have also shown much support to their candidates.
The ANC in the Free State last week held a rally at the Clive Solomon Stadium in Mangaung where their National Executive Member (NEC) and Minister of Home Affairs, Siyabonga Cwele, delivered a keynote address.
