SAHRC looks into death of NW special needs learner | News Article

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has raised its concerns over the safety of learners at special needs schools following the death of a pupil at the Christiana School for the blind in the North West last week.

The SAHRC has confirmed in a statement that it will be investigating the matter and will meet with the parents of the deceased pupil. The commission went to the special needs school on Monday, January 28, to conduct its investigations into the matter after being notified on Friday, January 25.

The special needs school has long been marred by concerns over the safety of learners after four boys between the ages of eight and thirteen died when a fire broke out at the school in November 2010. It was alleged that the boys were locked in one of the rooms at the dormitory and ended up being trapped inside as the fire broke out. In August 2015, four learners – this time teenage girls – died in a second fire at the school. The latter incident left 23 pupils injured after they jumped out of the first floor of the building to escape the fire.
