NC patrons get creative in raising funds for #FlamingoRescue─── PULANE CHOANE 13:12 Thu, 31 Jan 2019
The animal-loving community of Kimberley, in the Northern Cape, is challenging each other to drink a whole cup of Flamingo food liquid in an effort to raise funds for the Flamingo Rescue Project.
This comes after the SPCA in the city embarked on a massive rescue of over 1500 flamingo chicks which were abandoned at the Kamfers Dam in the area. The chicks made headlines this week as they were transported to various places of safety and rehabilitation centres around the country after water levels at the dam dropped, causing these chicks’ parents to abandon them in search for water and food elsewhere. Two patrons in the city have, since the start of what they now call “The Smoothie Challenge”, vowed to drink a mixture of the food served to these chicks to raise funds in respect of this project.
SPCA Inspector in the city, Mario van der Westhuizen, as well as Craig van Rensburg from a popular non-profit organization in the area known as “Saam Staan Kimberley”, are among the frontrunners of this challenge, with van der Westhuizen having vowed in a video that he would drink a whole cup of the liquid for every R10 000 that comes in. Van Rensburg made a similar pledge, stating that he would drink one standard shooter glass of flamingo food for every R2000 raised. Here he is taking the challenge:
The mixture comprises of food that was fed to the rescued chicks on a daily basis and includes raw prawns, raw shrimp, Nestum, hardboiled egg yolks, Beefee and other oils & vitamins.
The two Kimberlites are helping the challenge gain prominence by challenging others in the area to take on the challenge, while on the other hand, they’re encouraging members of the public to make donations into the SPCA Kimberley’s bank account. The details of this account are as follows:
Standard Bank
Account Nr: 040 057 607
Branch Code: 050 002
Donors are requested to use “Smoothy Challenge” as the reference when making these donations.
