The Kimberley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has confirmed that, while the situation at the Kamfers Dam is slowly going back to normal, a team of flamingo experts will later this week take to the dam to assess the situation.

This follows after over 3000 lesser flamingo chicks were rescued by the said SPCA branch, as well as various non-profit organisations last week, following extreme heat conditions which caused the adult flamingos to abandon their young at the dam. The adult flamingos have now returned to their nests and the SPCA clinic is currently nursing new hatchlings.

Meanwhile, the Kimberley SPCA said on its Facebook page that it has 18 flamingo chicks at its clinic, all of which are doing very well. This number consists of 17 hatchlings and one older flamingo chick. The branch said that the support it has received from the community since the news of the rescue broke, has been overwhelming with many donating either time or items in kind towards the organisation in respect of the flamingos.

Residents of the Kimberley community who still hope to assist with feeding these flamingos can visit the Kimberley SPCA branch all throughout the week during the stated times:

Monday-Friday 09h00-10h00, 12h00-13h00 and 15h00-16h00; and

Saturdays 09h00-10h00.
