Angry community members barricade road | News Article

Protestors in the informal settlement of Phase 6 in Bloemfontein are not only angry over the fact that they have for years been waiting for their councillor to allocate building sites for them.

They have also just found out that about 200 members from the Phase 7 community will benefit before them. This is according to a local resident, Tankiso Sebotse, who told OFM News'  Pulane Choane that this was revealed during a meeting held at the community yesterday.

Sebotse said the community was angered by this news yesterday when Ramabodu told them that these 200 residents had reportedly settled on top of a municipal pipe, which according to bylaws is illegal and they had to be urgently moved to the nearest site, which in this case is in Phase 6. He says the community, however, fails to understand why the municipality could not place the influx in Phase 7 where they had settled, as this means their placement will disadvantage those from the Phase 6 community.

He further said that the community has vowed to continue with protests until the councillor has adequate answers for them. Meanwhile, motorists have begun using the R702 road that remains to be barricaded with rocks and burning tyres. It seems to be business as usual with scholars making their way to school and employees using public transport as they too make their way to work.
