Ten arrested as Bfn Phase 6 protests reach Day 2─── PULANE CHOANE 09:19 Wed, 06 Feb 2019
Ten people have been arrested in Phase 6, an informal settlement in Bloemfontein, where protests over site allocations flared up.
This is according to police spokesperson in the Free State, Sinah Mpakane, who said that five people were arrested last night while another five were arrested this morning. This comes after the community used rocks, burning tyres and rubble to close the R702 road between Dewetsdorp and Bloemfontein on Tuesday afternoon.
Mpakane said the ten were arrested on charges of public violence as well as transgressing the Road Traffic Act as they had damaged the busy road hundreds use to travel on every day. This comes after the community of Phase 6 learnt from their ward councillor during a meeting on Monday that about 200 people from Phase 7 would be moved to Phase 6 and would be allocated sites to build homes and informal dwellings on. A local in the area, Tankiso Sebotse, said it was unacceptable that the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality was going to place these new residents in Phase 6 when the area already had its own list of people who have for many years been waiting to have sites allocated to them.
