Klerksdorp private college rocked by scandal─── LUCKY NKUYANE 07:52 Thu, 07 Feb 2019
A popular privately foreign-owned college in Klerksdorp in North West has been marred by allegations of improper romantic relationships between students and foreign lecturers - for marks and money.
At least four former students and one employee have confirmed to OFM News that lecturers pursue students for romantic relationships in return for good exam marks and financial assistance.
One of the former students who opted to remain anonymous, says in 2018 she was approached by three teachers including the headmaster of the school who persistently pursued her for a romantic relationship and this led to her discouragement to return to the college in 2019.
In a telephonic interview, the principal says he might have asked her out but it was an innocent request in a general discussion.
The principal says he is not aware of the allegations but he will institute a formal internal investigation to properly deal with the matter.
But one former employee says the principal did know about the allegations of the lecturers pursuing students for romantic relationships for marks and money and says the principal is trying to protect fellow foreign nationals.
The former employee said she was fired by the principal without a proper process being followed over fabricated allegations by lecturers and the principal.
"He says the reason I was fired is because the staff is complaining about me. They say I don't know my work, am too playful and clients don't like me, so if I stay they gonna lose clients," adds the former employee.
"He knows that one the foreign lecturers was nearly beaten by the father of the kid he was pursuing a relationship with in 2017 and the other lecturer was confronted by the boyfriend of the girl he was also trying to pursue a relationship with," the former employee added.
One of the former students who also asked not to be mentioned by name, confirmed that one of the former teachers would frequently share with them that certain educators were in romantic relationships with students for marks and money.
The other former student has shared at least three names of students she says were dating the lecturers in question.
"I know one of these girls were staying with us at Campbell Court and we all knew that she was dating this certain [lecturer], especially those students who were studying Health Community Work," she says.
The Department of Higher Education is yet to comment on an enquiry.
