The African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State is set to host celebrations in honour of Nelson Mandela on Naval Hill in Bloemfontein on Monday. This day marks 29 years since Nelson Mandela was released from the Victor Verster Prison.

ANC Provincial Secretary, Paseka Nompondo, is expected to address those present at the event. Naval Hill is home to a 6,5m statue of the former President and anti-apartheid activist, which was unveiled by the then ANC President Jacob Zuma in 2012.

It was revealed at the unveiling that Mandela's statue looks in the direction of Waaihoek Wesleyan Church in the Free State capital, which has been described as the birthplace of the ANC movement.

In 2018, OFM News reported that the church is amongst ten landmarks that have been earmarked for world heritage site status.

This announcement was made by Chairperson of the National Heritage Council (NHC), Thulani Mbuli, during a stakeholder dinner session held at President Hotel at the time.
