After weeks of extremely hot conditions, Bloemfontein not only had a bit of cooler weather recently but also experienced extreme flash-floods late Wednesday afternoon.

Many roads in the area were completely flooded, resulting in a complete standstill of traffic. Water pooled over the roads causing large puddles, forcing drivers to take alternative routes.

OFM News spoke to a few residents, whose yards were completely underwater.

Stefan Young was busy trying to sweep the water away when OFM News arrived. He explained that he was not at home when the flash-floods occurred, however, when he got home he’s front lawn was covered in the pool.

Meanwhile, Elani Claassen from the South African Weather Service says rainy weather will persist until Friday. Claassen is cautioning motorists to slow down and drive carefully on slippery roads. The North West and the Northern Cape will also be experiencing rainy weather until Friday, while no rain is expected next week.

According to Jan van der Walt, 65mm of rain was recorded in Fichardtpark within an hour. Pellissier residents recorded up to 127mm in this same period of time.

Annelene Thomas from Bloemfontein had a frightening experience when she was on her way to pick up her son after a match where Grey College played cricket against Sand du Plessis. She was driving there when Victoria Road was suddenly flooded.

"I could not turn around, as there were cars behind me," she explained to OFM News. "So I turned right to try to head back to Parfit Avenue. A high mass of water, however, came from the side. It was so high, it started flooding her car. A brick wall on that side gave way and the road was soon obstructed with debris. Two men (one called A.J.) stopped and assisted me. One towed my car to safety while the other man walked alongside the car until I was safe. I am forever grateful to these unknown men. I wish I could thank them."
