Gender-based violence a great concern in SA─── SAZLY HARTZENBERG 06:31 Sun, 17 Feb 2019
Gender-based violence has been making headlines in South Africa for many months and is still a great concern and was one of the issues that arose at the Free State ANC manifesto launch.
The ANC national chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, said that it is not fair that South African women and children are afraid to walk streets of the country because of criminals who walk the streets after dark.
He further said that it is the party's responsibility to liberate women and children from all criminals and that abuse against women and children are treasonable in any other country, so SA follow suit.
According to Mantashe, women and children are seen as easy targets and it is because of this reason that he urges all members of the party to get involved in initiatives or forums that fight against the abuse of women and children.
This comes months after scores of women took to the streets right across the country to mourn the lives of fellow women and children who lost their lives as a result of gender-based violence.
The #TotalShutDown march had participants march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in August last year, where they planned to hand over a memorandum to the president.
