According to the Rector and Vice-Chancellor of UFS, Francis Petersen, the university is considering various measures to ensure the safety of all students, especially the ones working in computer laboratories until after dark.

Peterson said that they are working on an App that has a tracking device, that students can use when they are in danger, that will alert authorities.

He also said that the UFS has approached the Mangaung Metro Municipality to enforce stricter bylaws and to look into a long term plan - a virtual cloud for the city - so that students can access the internet wherever they are.

This comes after a 23-year-old UFS student was found dead on the sidewalk by other students walking to class in Willows, Bloemfontein - and just months after a law student was stabbed to death in the same area.
