Maimane to lead a picket outside the office of FS premier─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:50 Wed, 20 Feb 2019
The leader of the official opposition, Mmusi Maimane, is on Thursday expected to lead a picket outside the office of the Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela, over millions of rands owed to the power utility Eskom by local municipalities in the province
The Democratic Alliance leader Maimane is accusing the ANC-led government of failing to hold those in office accountable and to effectively run these municipalities that include Maluti-A-Phofung and Matjhabeng, amongst others.
The media officer in Maimane’s office, Azola Mboniswa, tells OFM News the two municipalities are the worst run and worst offenders, owing Eskom R2.8 billion and R1.8 billion respectively.
Mboniswa says tomorrow’s picket will seek to put pressure on the provincial government in the hopes that it will put measures in place to ensure that in the future, municipalities collect revenue timeously and pay their Eskom bills.
Meanwhile, the provincial government spokesperson, Tiisetso Makhele, says the Provincial Government will always listen to and engage with all citizens of the province, in the quest to build a better country.
“Eskom is R419 billion in debt and reportedly has only two months left before being declared bankrupt,” Azola adds.
“Maimane will be joined by Phumzile van Damme and DA MPs, councillors and activists.”
