No arrest in Pierneef painting case─── CATHY DLODLO 13:05 Thu, 21 Feb 2019
No arrest have been made months after the theft of a multi-million rand Pierneef painting from former Free State Premier Ace Magashule’s office.
The alleged theft of the painting was detailed in a Daily Maverick exposé, but despite the fact that all roleplayers and events detailed in the article and a criminal investigation has been confirmed, the investigation has still lead to no arrests or charges. Hawks spokesperson, Lynda Steyn, said in response to questions from OFM News that the theft of the R8 million painting is being investigated by the Serious Commercial Crime Section of the Hawks. She said the Pierneef painting has since been recovered and given back to the Premier's Office.
Earlier reports indicated that the painting was among Magashule's personal belongings when he vacated office. It was allegedly then given to one of Magashule's bodyguards, Ricardo Mettler. According to media reports he admitted receiving the painting as a gift from Magashule. The painting then ended up with a local businessman, who approached auctioneers to determine the value of the painting.
The auctioneer placed an advertisement – including the Pierneef - which was noticed by Free State authorities, who then discovered the artwork was missing. The auctioneers reported the matter to the police.
OFM News contacted Mettler, but he indicated that he did not want to comment.
