The situation remains calm but tense in Boitumelong at Bloemhof in the North West after a car was set alight on Thursday night on the N12 near the town with no arrests thus far.

Police spokesperson, Sam Tselenyane, confirms to OFM News that the police have squared off with angry residents over allegations of suspected gangsterism in that area. This has been a thorny issue for quite some time.

Tselanyane previously told OFM News that three houses belonging to local police officers were torched on Wednesday night and set alight while a police officer suffered facial injuries after being hit with a stone following a squabble with the residents. He said the residents on Thursday morning grouped themselves and showed intentions to attack the local police station for the second time, protesting for the release of five suspects who were arrested for assault.

He added that residents ditched the plan after being addressed by the Pudimoe Cluster commander.

In September 2018 residents went on a rampage after joining forces with the local taxi drivers assaulting suspected local gang members with rocks and iron rods, amongst other weapons. In the process, a 27-year-old man and a 16-year-old pupil were killed while six others sustained serious injuries.
